Getting approved for used car financing in Ontario is more accessible than many people assume. You don't need perfect credit, and you don't need a massive down payment. But you do need to meet some basic requirements. Here's the full list of what lenders look for, what's negotiable, and what's non-negotiable.

Non-Negotiable Requirements

These apply regardless of which lender you're working with:

  • Age 18+: You must be the age of majority in Ontario to enter a legally binding loan contract.
  • Valid government-issued ID: Ontario driver's licence, Canadian passport, permanent resident card, or citizenship card. Lenders need to verify your identity.
  • Proof of income: Every lender needs to see that you earn enough to make the monthly payments. The specific documents vary (more on that below), but you must be able to show verifiable income.
  • Canadian residency: You must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a valid work permit. International students with a valid study permit may qualify with a co-signer.
  • Proof of address: A utility bill, bank statement, or government letter showing your current Ontario address. This confirms you live where you say you live.

Income and Employment

Lenders want to know you can afford the payments. Here's what they look at:

  • Minimum income: Most lenders require at least $1,500–$2,000 per month gross income. Some subprime lenders set the bar lower if you have a co-signer or larger down payment.
  • Employment length: Many lenders prefer at least 3 months at your current job. If you just started a new position, a job offer letter can sometimes bridge the gap. Self-employed applicants typically need 1–2 years of history.
  • Employment type: Full-time, part-time, contract, seasonal, self-employed, gig work, pension, and disability income are all accepted by various lenders. The key is consistency and documentation.
  • Debt-to-income ratio: Lenders calculate how much of your income goes to existing debts (rent, credit cards, other loans). Most prefer this ratio to be below 40–45%, including the new car payment.

Credit Requirements

There is no single minimum credit score for a used car loan. Different lenders serve different credit tiers. With a score above 680, you'll qualify at most lenders including major banks. Between 600 and 679, alternative and near-prime lenders come into play. Between 500 and 599, subprime specialists work with you at higher rates. Below 500, deep subprime lenders can still approve you, usually with a larger down payment. Even with no credit history at all, there are options — especially with a co-signer.

Down Payment

Down payment requirements scale with credit risk. Prime borrowers (680+) often qualify with $0 down. Fair credit borrowers should plan for $500–$1,000. Subprime and credit rebuild situations typically require $1,000–$2,000 or more. A trade-in vehicle with positive equity counts toward your down payment. The more you put down, the better your rate and monthly payment.

Vehicle Insurance

Before you drive off, you'll need full coverage auto insurance (comprehensive and collision) with the lender listed as the loss payee. This is mandatory for financed vehicles in Ontario. The lender needs assurance that their collateral is protected. Get insurance quotes while your loan is being processed so you're ready to go at delivery.

What's Flexible

Here's what many people don't realize: a lot of the "requirements" are actually flexible across lenders. Credit score minimums, employment duration thresholds, down payment amounts, vehicle age restrictions, and debt ratio limits all vary from lender to lender. A decline from one lender doesn't mean a decline from all lenders.
